Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Pasta Fit for a King?

Ok, so we didn't meet any VIP's at the National Theatre a couple of nights, ago, but we did meet a world record holder yesterday. I had posted a while back about Doha breaking into the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the world's longest sandwich and the largest bowl of pasta. Well, we (along with neighbors Jim and Margaret) met corporate Chef Kamal Mustafa on our weekly breakfast visit to American Grill. That would be Mustafa, "like Lion King", he informed us. The name seemed to be a good fit for him, as he had a proud and commanding presence. He hails from Lebanon, but grew up in the U.S. and attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York. We visited with him for a while discussing the colossal feat of building the 1730 meter sandwich that snatched the record away from Italy who coveted the record for less than a month. The bowl of pasta was 4300 kilograms which converts to a whopping 9480 pounds! With a sheepish, but smirky smile, he announced that the previous record was set by the U.S. back in 2004. So, Qatar has trumped America. Nice job, guys. And wouldn't you know it, there was a rare rainstorm that occurred during the event, "which made the bread very soggy", Stacie added. That's Stacie next to Chef Mustafa in the picture. She is one of the many courteous and attentive wait staff that American Grill is known for. Hat's off to Chef and everyone involved for their accomplishment and even more so for donating the food to a charity that provided it to the needy.
